About a year ago I saw this article about the life and death of subcultures going around. I can’t find it now, but it explained how subcultures thrive and eventually die. If you know what I’m talking about feel free to link in the comments.
What I remember from it is that there are many different ways of contributing to these small communities, and that these cultures die out when they get overrun with those who are not contributing. There are lots of ways to contribute. But money is one of the key ones.
People in New York City will think of nothing of blowing $200 on a mediocre dinner and over-sweet cocktails, but paradoxically it can feel harder to spend that amount of money on a small artistic enterprise that you love or support.
I don’t fault anyone too much for that, at times I’ve found it hard myself. But then I realized something. Paying for a play, a film, a Substack, an independent writer’s book, piece of artwork, etc., is the most critical part of the equation.
I think some people feel alienated by contributing money, as though it means they’re not part of it. That couldn’t be less true. And from experience I can say: it feels nice to get free entry, but I realized it feels even nicer to pay full price and know that I’m supporting work that matters to me way more than the shrimp tacos at Ofrenda.
A wise friend once told me “never resist a generous impulse.” I like that advice. It doesn’t mean always be generous. Who could manage that? It just means if you have a generous impulse, don’t actively ignore it.
