It’s a wild time in the culture right now. I feel more than ever that there is no mainstream. I don’t know anyone who cares genuinely about what’s happening at the DNC convention; the only people I know who care peripherally are those using it to farm engagement on Substack and X.com.
A big part of my own community is roiled about a leadership change at a tech/culture project called Urbit. I wrote more about that here. In some ways it’s still a small project, but it’s incredibly bullish for its value that there is a substantial portion of people who care so deeply about it.
I’m at an interesting place with the Mars Review right now. I hear stories of editors in high places asking about the MRB, wanting to know more. Based on our guest list for the White Party (tix still available, although price will rise Thurs at midnight) I’m confident it will be the literary event of the year. But the MRB is still under the radar in a way. I sort of like it like that. But it may be time for us to break out of our shell.
Possibly that will be through our mysterious Lil Skribblers project (join community here) or possibly just through making the magazine bigger and better.
One new feature I’m looking forward to, based on the success of the Swimsuit Edition, is Girls in Swimwear Reading Books. Because, why not? I’ll be collaborating with the extremely talented Patricia Torvalds, who designed the swimwear featured in our New York shoot. This MRB feature will include both Patricia’s swimwear, and excerpts from literature.
Speaking of which, I still have all these great photos from the Swimsuit Edition which we couldn’t fit in the print magazine. I feel like I ought to share them, since our photographers, models, designers did such great work. Thanks again to Patricia, photographers Fabio Utrilla and Hiato Escamilla.
The photos feature Bronze Age Shawty showing some leg, Bimbo Ubermsensch showing a lot more, Cassidy Grady getting wet in the tub in cowboy boots, Olivia Hicolau getting wet in the tub in heels (the bikini says Mars on it), Keeley Stuff and Olivia getting cozy in bed, and Nathalia Escobar of El Salvador enjoying her country’s national dish, the glorious papusa. Enjoy (responsibly).
